Moon Sweepers fixes: crashes, lost saves, stuck belts and co-op bugs

Update to 1.0.4 first - it fixed most launch bugs. AMD crashes are solved by DirectX 11 (add -force-d3d12 to go back), and damaged saves are restored from up to five backups per slot.

Update to the latest version first: patch 1.0.4 (October 25, 2026) fixed most launch-week problems, including machines that stop with "Could not pack a capsule", players falling through the Moon and AMD crashes. The fixes below are sorted by what you see in the game.

The game crashes on an AMD graphics card

Since 1.0.4 the game starts in DirectX 11 by default, which stops the AMD crashes. If you want DirectX 12 anyway, add -force-d3d12 to the game's launch options in Steam.

Steam Deck or Linux will not start the game

Older Proton versions failed at start-up; 1.0.4 fixed that. Update the game and try again before changing Proton settings.

My save will not load or seems corrupted

Large, heavily cleaned bases that looked broken now load: 1.0.3 fixed the loading, and the save files themselves were intact. Since 1.0.4 the game also repairs a damaged save when the world loads, using its backups, and tells you when it did.

Each slot keeps up to five full backups, taken a minute into every session and then every 30 minutes, outside Steam Cloud. They are stored at:

C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\LocalLow\DragDropGames\MoonSweepers\Backups

After a crash the next start checks your saves and repairs damaged ones. Note that a save made in 1.0.4 cannot be opened by an older version.

Saving or quitting takes forever

1.0.4 cut saving on big bases from up to half a minute to a fraction of a second, and quitting no longer waits on the progress message.

Machines stop with "Could not pack a capsule"

That message appeared even with power and materials available; 1.0.4 fixed it for all machines. If it still happens after updating, check the input, power and output of the first machine where material stops.

Belts stop or capsules disappear

  • Splitter or merger does nothing in co-op: crewmates' pieces did not work at launch. 1.0.3 fixed that and 1.0.4 lets anyone place them on belts built by others, so the host no longer has to build them.
  • A splitter will not switch direction: it alternates on its own; to send everything one way, remove the other branch.
  • Capsules fall under foundations after removing a belt: fixed in 1.0.4.
  • Containers vanish at a hub port without payment: empty the hub's manual intake inside the station first; a leftover there stopped the port from counting new containers.
  • Belt still stuck: follow one capsule from the start and check each piece's direction before rebuilding anything.

Dust reappears or players see different ground

1.0.4 reworked ground sync so everyone sees the same cleaned ground, including robot trails and hand cleaning. Make sure every crewmate is on the same version.

I fell through the Moon

Falling through the ground, including after teleporting between stations, was fixed in 1.0.4. If you are stuck, press ESC and choose Unstuck.

I demolished a garage and lost my vehicles

At launch, demolishing a garage deleted the vehicles stored in it. Since 1.0.3 they move to another garage or wait for the next one you build, and every garage can call back, store and upgrade your vehicles.

J.O.O.N.A.S. stops working

At launch J.O.O.N.A.S. stopped when players moved away. 1.0.4 keeps it cleaning with nobody nearby and lets it launch capsules to the nearest Capsule catcher from anywhere. Without a catcher it still waits with a full bin.

"Moon Sweepers needs Steam" when launching

Some players get this message even when launching from their Steam library while logged in to the owning account. No official fix has been posted yet; report it in the developers' Discord, which is where they ask for bug reports.

What happens when you alt-tab

Alt-tabbing out of Moon Sweepers pauses your vehicle. As soon as the game window loses focus, rovers and sweepers brake, even with Cruise Control bought, so you cannot leave a vehicle driving in the background. Players have asked the developers to change this; there is no setting for it in 1.0.4.

  • Crash on alt-tab: one player reports the game crashing when switching windows. No fix has been posted; report it with your hardware details in the developers' Discord.
  • Stuck at start-up: one player got past a hang at launch by pressing Alt+Tab to switch away and back.
  • Stuck movement key: a player whose S key stayed held after a full container cleared it by alt-tabbing out and back in.
